Invited Paper
Optical fibers for UV - spectroscopy - Karl-Friedrich Klein
Fachhochschule / University of Applied Sciences Giessen-Friedberg

We invite you to go to the discussion section either to ask your specific question or to send your comments regarding optical fibers in spectroscopy.

Professor Klein and other experts are pleased to help you with your specific problem!

More than one decade ago, the usage of fibers (glass, silica, polymers) has stimulated many applications in special areas, e.g. in the analytical and medical fields or process control. At the beginning, the activities took place in the visible wavelength region or in the neighborhood, because of the well-known performance of the wavelength-dependent transmission.

Due to material improvements and modifications, the silica-based fiber with undoped core and fluorine-doped cladding opened up the UVC-region (l < 250 nm) for fiberoptic applications. However, the user has to pay attention to three main parameters:
  • Basic attenuation
  • UV-induced loss due to solarisation
  • Non- linear attenuation, mainly with pulsed lasers

After a lot of discussions during exhibitions, after presentations or during consulting
I had the impression that there is still some need for further education in respect to UV-fibers. In addition to the multiple possibilities for new and innovative applications and products, it is essential to know the limits of silica-based fibers under these extreme conditions, too.

With the attached article, I would like to present the state of the art (2000/01). Based on that, the discussion about transmission media in the deep UV-region will be pushed. It is clear that we have to pay attention on the system requirements, too: UV-light sources like deuterium-lamps or lasers and detection-systems like diode-array based spectrometer have to be improved and adjusted in respect to the whole analytical system.

I hope that on this platform a lot of people like end-users or suppliers of "ideas" and/or products will communicate. In addition to articles with additional information, which will be presented to this UV-fiber interesting group, questions and recommendations can be placed in the discussion board.
